I bought this about a year ago from Amazon for about £25, the original price for this is around £205. You can buy two different models of this 5-bay drive enclosure. the version that I bought keeps each drive separate but you can software raid them in your OS, and the 2nd version has raid built in. Inside the enclosure are 5 SATA ports and a built-in 80mm fan to make sure that your drives don’t overheat while in use.

The enclosure has space for either 5 different 3.5 or 2.5 drives, which means that you can add up to 90TB of storage to your pc. Each drive is hot-swappable so you don’t need to turn it off and on again when you need to change a drive.

The enclosure connects to your computer via USB B 3.0 to USB A cable which gives you high-speed file transfers of up to 6Gbits according to the seller, although I was only able to get up to 77Mbps. This will of course depend on this drive and the USB port that you use.

My use case was to use for a storage server powered by Ubuntu Server OS, this was easy to do as all the drives showed up correctly. It wasn’t until I decided to change my server to TrueNas OS that I found the enclosure’s downside. When connecting to a computer the enclosure gives the OS the same Drive Serial ID for each of the 5 drive bays. This means that it isn’t compatible with some server OSs, which is a downside if you need to use it in the same use case as I do.

I have personally used this on Windows 10/11 and Ubuntu Desktop / Server OSs however your mileage may vary. but if you’re looking to use this for your personal computer then it’s perfect. I would definitely recommend it. If you don’t need all 5 drive bays then you can buy versions of this with fewer drives. There are versions with 4, 2 and there are also other styles as well.
