My portable USB C Laptop charger

This entry is a little different as its something I put together when I wasn’t working from home and wanted a charger that I could carry around and be able to charge either my phone, my tablet or my laptop (which doesn’t charge via USB C) without carrying multiple plugs.

After doing some research, I found out the following pieces of information. First, I needed a plug and USB C cable that could handle at least 65w. The second was that I needed a 4.0×1.7mm barrel plug to charge the laptop.

This led to hours of hunting around on Amazon and eBay, and different types of the same cable wouldn’t match my needs. however, as you can tell by this blog post I found the parts I needed.

Starting with the plug, I ordered the Haibz 64W PD charger with 1x USB A and 1x USB C ports. It uses Gallium Nitrate to be small and powerful and quickly charges my phone or laptop. You can charge 2 devices at the same time, however, it will share the 65W between them. This cost me £11.99, however, it is out of stock for the time being and the closest alternative I can find is the Lyntex 65w USB C plug at £16.00 and it has 2x USB C ports instead of the 1 that mine has.

The cable is a 2m 100W USB C to USB C cable which is braided for strength with support up to 20V/5A. This cost me £6.28 which I think is a great price for a 100w USB C cable.

The barrel plug is the JSER USB C to Female DC which can supper between 18 – 20V. This cost me £7.88, and as you can see, it’s not much but does the job you need it for. You can buy many different types of end plugs for a range of different laptops, such as HPs barrel jack, Lenovo’s USB A port and many more.

Altogether this setup cost me £26.15, while an official replacement was £14.58 and it doesn’t come with the USB A port for a second device. Even though it cost almost double, I would still do this again because it makes this more modular and if one part fails, then I don’t have to replace all of it and I can use it for a future laptop that uses USB C for charging instead.

The downside to this replacement is when the laptop has shut down due to low power, you need a proper plug to get the charge going, also if you plug into the USB A port while using the USB C port for your laptop, it won’t supply the 65w that the laptop needs. However, if you use a higher-watt plug, then it may fix both issues or at least the second issue.

As newer Laptops use USB C cables for power and adaptors, this would become a wasted post when adding the barrel plug. However, if you are using an old laptop as a Linux server, an emulator or just using it as a device for a family member but you lost or repurposed the charger for something else, then this could be an idea for being able to power that computer for a bit longer.

Finally, just the USB plug and cable will still be perfect for any laptop that charges using USB C PD, with the ability to use the same plug for multiple devices when space is at a premium.
